Evanston ophthalmologist Steven V.L. Brown, M.D., a Hadley School for the Blind trustee, has never quite understood why the organization hasn't attracted nationwide support.
Maybe the reason is that the North Shore has always been so good to Hadley. A case in point is Brown's family. His grandfather, E. V. L. Brown, M.D., helped William E. Hadley found the school, and served as its chairman. His father, D.V. L. Brown, M.D., was also on the board of directors, and his uncle C.B. Jones, also led the organization.
"He and my aunt, Nancy Brown Jones, were really instrumental in the 50s and 60s in getting Hadley off the ground," Brown said. "They basically got it moved out of the little one-room office space in the Winnetka Community House and moved it to the present building in the early 1960s."
He too, is a Hadley trustee, now concentrating on monitoring curriculum. "Our long-range plan is to double the number of students," the Wilmette resident and third-generation eye surgeon said last week. "Our mission is to offer education, and create a better global community."
