What is Bookshare?

Bookshare.org Logo

Bookshare.org is the largest online library for qualified, print impaired individuals, including people are who are blind or visually, physically or learning impaired.

The library provides access to more than 70,000 books and 150 periodicals available in synthesized voice, refreshable braille or large print.

Currently, all actively enrolled Hadley students in the United States can become members of Bookshare at no cost. In return, Hadley has contributed supplemental course readings to the library.

What is unique about Bookshare is that while many titles come from the publishers, most come from members and volunteers contributing to the library. The material is also content neutral and current. For example, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was available to Bookshare members within four hours of the hard copy being released to the public.

Visit www.bookshare.org for more information.

MEMBERSHIP FEES:

Free to Hadley students in the U.S. currently enrolled in a course.
For non-U.S. students, including those from Canada:

$55 the first year ($15 sign up fee and $40 annually)

$40 each year thereafter

MEMBERSHIP SIGN UP:

Visit the Bookshare Web site: www.bookshare.org. Under the "Membership" tab, select "Membership Options." Then, select the "Individual Memberships" link. Select the "Sign up for an individual membership" link. You will be prompted for information such as age, name, address and student status.

Be sure to enter promo code "Hadley Student" during step 3.

You will be asked to provide proof of disability and submit payment. Disregard the proof of disability request as Hadley will handle this for you. U.S. students may also disregard the request for payment. Non-U.S. Hadley students will need to pay the fee, as noted above.

When you have finished the sign up process, you will receive an email from Bookshare with a password. Bookshare will then contact Hadley to verify that you are a current student and that we have certification of your print impairment on file. Once completed, you will receive a second email from Bookshare notifying you that you can now use your password to download books. This will take about a week.

If you have questions, please email Dianna: dianna@hadley.edu or call 847-784-2794.
