Course Description
Whether you're a parent of a schoolchild who is blind or you are working in the blindness field, your ability to read and emboss contracted braille will enhance your relationship with your child or client. The goal of this course is to enable you to visually read and emboss contracted braille.

Successful completion of "Introduction to Braille" or adequate competency as determined by the braille diagnostic test

Twenty-seven assignments are submitted to the instructor. Students also have to complete a pretest and a posttest.

Objectives and Content

After completing Lesson 1, you will be able to read and braille alphabet whole-word signs.

After completing Lesson 2, you will be able to read and braille 10 short-form words.

After completing Lesson 3, you will be able to use five whole- and part-word signs.

After completing Lesson 4, you will be able to read and braille eight additional short-form words.

After completing Lesson 5, you will be able to use six whole- and part-word signs.

After completing Lesson 6, read and braille nine additional short-form words.

After completing Lesson 7, you will be able to correctly use dot (5) initial-letter contractions.

After completing Lesson 8, you will be able to correctly use seven part-word signs.

After completing Lesson 9, you will be able to read and write nine additional short-form words.

After completing Lesson 10, you will be able to use

  1. single and double italic signs
  2. the letter sign
  3. the ellipsis and the dash

After completing Lesson 11, you will be able to correctly use dot (45) initial-letter contractions.

After completing Lesson 12, you will be able to use two lower-cell signs as whole and part words.

After completing Lesson 13, you will be able to read and write nine additional short-form words.

After completing Lesson 14, you will be able to correctly use dot (456) contractions.

After completing Lesson 15, you will be able to use four whole-word lower-cell signs.

After completing Lesson 16, you will be able to read and write seven additional short-form words.

After completing Lesson 17, you will be able to correctly use

  1. the fraction line
  2. the cent and percent signs
  3. the symbols and abbreviations for inches and feet, and the abbreviations for meters and centimeters

After completing Lesson 18, you will be able to correctly use dot (6) contractions.

After completing Lesson 19, you will be able to correctly use the three whole-word, lower-cell contractions to, into, and by.

After completing Lesson 20, you will be able to read and write eight additional short-form words.
