Course Description
Glaucoma affects tens of millions of people worldwide, but despite its prevalence, many people lack accurate information about this disease. Therefore, the goal of this course is to provide glaucoma-related information to help the professional take a supportive role during his or her client's adjustment to life with glaucoma. The lessons describe the workings of the eye as well as the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma. They also discuss the emotional impact of vision loss and ways to continue daily activities when such loss occurs. The material in this course is informational only and does not replace the advice of a medical specialist.

Objectives and Content

After completing lesson 1, the student will be able to

  3. describe less common forms of glaucoma

After completing lesson 2, the student will be able to

  1. define the role of eye doctors
  2. describe a routine eye exam
  3. describe additional eye tests for glaucoma

After completing lesson 3, the student will be able to

  1. discuss glaucoma medications
  2. describe laser treatments for glaucoma
  3. describe conventional surgeries for glaucoma

After completing lesson 4, the student will be able to

  1. describe the reaction phases of adjusting to change
  2. describe the rebuilding phases of adjusting to change
  3. discuss overcoming negative emotions

After completing lesson 5, the student will be able to

  1. describe the rehabilitation team
  2. discuss adaptations
  3. discuss orientation and mobility techniques
