Course Description
Play is essential to a child’s growth and development. Through play, children acquire self-confidence and become more independent. The right toy can help a child reach developmental milestones. This course offers suggestions that parents and caregivers can use to teach the child about himself and the world around him.

Objectives and Content

After completing Lesson 1, students will be able to

  1. describe how children learn through play
  2. examine the different types of play
  3. explain the benefits of play
  4. discuss why play may be especially important to the child who is visually impaired

After completing Lesson 2, students will be able to

  1. assess the child’s eye condition and her use of vision
  2. examine the considerations that can affect the child’s ability to play
  3. discuss special considerations for children with additional disabilities

After completing Lesson 3, students will be able to

  1. summarize the development of a newborn
  2. describe how a 3- to 6-month-old responds to his environment

After completing Lesson 4, students will be able to

  1. explain how the play of the 6- to 12-month-old reflects the changes in her development
  2. describe how 12- to 18-month-old children develop and play

After completing Lesson 5, students will be able to

  1. examine how the child’s play evolves between 18 months and 3 years
  2. summarize how play changes during the preschool years

After completing Lesson 6, students will be able to

  1. locate an appropriate play area
  2. integrate play into their daily schedule
  3. offer suggestions for making playtime enjoyable
  4. involve the child’s family members and peers in play activities

After completing Lesson 7, students will be able to

  1. choose interesting toys that are durable and safe
  2. adapt toys to meet the needs of the child
  3. examine the benefits of homemade toys
