Have you recently discovered that a person you serve through your work has age-related macular degeneration (AMD)? This course enables you to take a supportive role in the rehabilitation process. You'll acquire specific information about macular degeneration and learn how people with AMD continue accustomed activities with limited vision.

Objectives and Content

After completing Lesson 1, you will be able to

  1. describe how a healthy retina works
  2. describe the progression of AMD
  3. discuss the risk factors for developing AMD

After completing Lesson 2, you will be able to

  1. briefly describe how an eye doctor diagnoses AMD
  2. discuss the doctor-patient relationship

After completing Lesson 3, you will be able to

  1. consult appropriately with a low vision team
  2. explain how to use peripheral vision
  3. describe some visual aids

After completing Lesson 4, you will be able to discuss continuing many activities with AMD.

After completing Lesson 5, you will be able to

  1. describe some possible emotional reactions to having AMD
  2. list ways to confront negative emotions
  3. discuss Charles Bonnet syndrome
