Objectives and Content

After completing Lesson 1, you will be able to:

  1. identify reasons for starting a self-help group
  2. describe the characteristics and various formats of self-help groups
  3. discuss the tasks involved when planning a self-help group

After completing Lesson 2, you will be able to:

  1. indicate the factors involved in scheduling a meeting place and time
  2. describe ways to build group membership
  3. describe how to conduct a self-help group meeting

After completing Lesson 3: you will be able to:

  1. describe ways to lead a self-help group
  2. describe ways of promoting positive interactions in a self-help group

After completing Lesson 4, you will be able to:

  1. counter problematic behaviors in a self-help group
  2. discuss what to do if serious depression becomes apparent in a self-help group member
  3. discuss what to do if abuse-related issues (e.g., substance abuse, domestic abuse) become apparent in a self-help group
