Fraction Rules

Quick rules for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions.

Addition and Subtraction Steps:

  1. Change all mixed numbers into improper fractions.
  2. Find a common denominator (least common multiple).
  3. Change the fractions to like fractions.
  4. Add or subtract the numerators.
  5. Keep the denominator.
  6. Simplify.

Multiplication Steps:

  1. Change all mixed numbers into improper fractions.
  2. Do cancellations as many times as necessary.
  3. Multiply the remaining numbers across the top for the numerator and across the bottom for the denominator.

Division Steps:

  1. Change all mixed numbers into improper fractions.
  2. Keep the first fraction.
  3. Change the division sign to a multiplication sign.
  4. Invert the second fraction.
  5. Follow the rules for multiplication.
